SECOND LAW OF THERMODYNAMICS FOR CYCLES
Heat Engine
1. Receives heat from a high temp.source.
2. Converts part of heat to work.
3.
Diverts heat to a low temp. sink.
4. Operates on a cycle.
Second Law for Heat Engine
IIt is impossible for any device that operates on a cycle to receive heat from a single reservoir and produce a net amount of work.
Heat Pumps & Refrigerators
1. Receive work to create high pressure.
2.
Condense gas and dump heat.
3.
Reduce pressure (convert to gas).
4. Extract heat from heat source.
Second Law for Heat Pumps & Refrigerators
It is impossible to construct a device that operates on a cycle and produces no effect other than the transfer of heat from a low temp. reservoir to a high temp reservoir.
