Technology
1.Technology and the Writer is an introductory course for entering majors. Students are presented the physical contents of the computer (cards, busses, processors, etc.), the nature of operating systems, the nature of networks, the Internet and WWW, and most of the software applications students will be expected to use in the more advanced classes. Students will spend the first half of the quarter learning about computers and exploring the Internet and will spend the second half of the quarter examining software. Multimedia
2.The Multimedia Authoring class is somewhat misnamed because it is really a hypermedia class. Students using ToolBook will build two CD-ROM projects. The first project is a working CBT module, used by Mechanical Engineering to instruct its manufacturing engineering class. The second is a personal project driven by the students' interests. The finished projects should both be portfolio quality projects which students will place on CD-ROM disks. Syllabus  --  Back to top of page

Help
3. The Help File authoring class focusses on creating online help.  Students examine WinHelp, NetHelp, and HTML-Help.  Projects include three help files of varying degrees of completion and complexity.  --  Back to top of page

Electronic
4. Electronic Texts focuses on the design and production of major Web Sites. Students will apply HTML, three authoring systems, JavaScripting, VB Scripting, Java, Active-X, VRML, QuickTimeVR, HTMLHelp, and Macromedia ShockWave. In addition, they will examine the techniques (e.g., calling variables) masters use for creating sites that can measure in the hundreds or thousands of pages. Finally, they will examine the secondary software used for manipulating visuals, videos, animation, and sound. Students taking this class will be able to design and manage the development of major corporate sites and major magazine sites. Syllabus  --  Back to top of page
